How to Clean Leather Shoes at Home
A safe, step-by-step cleaning routine that will not strip the finish.
Start dry. Knock the loose dirt off with a horsehair brush before any moisture touches the leather, because wet grit acts like sandpaper against the grain.
Use a pH-balanced saddle soap worked into a damp — not wet — cloth. Clean in small circles, one panel at a time, and wipe the lather off before it dries. Never run leather under a tap and never put shoes in a washing machine.
Let the shoes dry away from direct sun and heat for at least 12 hours with cedar trees inside. Finish with a cream conditioner, then a wax polish once the cream has absorbed. If the leather looks chalky after drying, it was thirsty before you started and needs a second light coat of conditioner.
