When Should You Resole Your Shoes?

Five signs it is time, and the one sign you have waited too long.

Hold the shoe sole-up in good light. If you can see the stitch line worn flat, a shiny patch at the ball of the foot, or a pinhole of daylight, the sole is finished.

Other signals: water coming through in rain, the heel breast collapsing inward, or a hollow sound when you tap the waist of the sole. Any of these means the outsole is no longer protecting the welt.

The point of no return is welt damage. Once the sole wears through and the stitching abrades, the next thing to go is the welt itself — and a welt rebuild costs two to three times a standard resole. Bring shoes in while there is still a millimetre or two of leather left.

When to bring it to us instead

Home care handles maintenance. Structural problems — worn welts, split seams, collapsed heel counters, set-in stains — need a bench, tools and matched materials. If you are unsure which side of that line your pair falls on, send a photo or bring it by and we will tell you straight.
